Is the SPCC really independent?
Yes, the Service Police Complaints Commissioner is independent from the MOD and government. The Commissioner was appointed by the Crown and is accountable to Parliament, not the MOD.
I’ve been told the SPCC will independently investigate my complaint. How long will that investigation take?
The SPCC aims to complete investigations within 12 months of receipt by the Appropriate Authority.
Will I be interviewed as part of an investigation?
All investigations vary in nature, but you will always have an opportunity to put any accounts on record with your Lead Investigator.
Can I complain about matters involving the Service Police which occurred abroad?
Yes, you can lodge a complaint regardless of where the alleged matters occurred.
Can I lodge a Service Complaint with the SPCC?
No, the SPCC only handles complaints against the Service Police. If you wish to lodge a Service Complaint, please contact the Armed Forces Commissioner (AFC).
Can I complain about any UK police force?
No, the SPCC can only respond to complaints made against the Service (Military) Police. Any matters regarding civilian police should be referred to:
- The Independent Office for Police Complaints if the constabulary operates in England and Wales
- The Police Investigation and Review Commissioner if relating to Police Scotland
- The Police Ombudsman for Northern Ireland if relating to the Police Service of Northern Ireland
I am not a Service Person, but I have a complaint against the Service Police. Can I submit this to the SPCC?
Yes. If you have had an interaction with the Service Police, or are acting on behalf of a Service Person to raise a complaint against the Service Police, you can contact the SPCC.
